A game that I truly liked and stands as a common favorite, is the Assassin's Creed Series. The story revolves around an organization of assassin's that fight against another called the Templars for spreading their beliefs. The thing is that each game takes place in a different period of time so its like you are transported to a different time in history. Ubisoft does an excellent job of making the surroundings much like the chosen era. The games seems to be developed to create a game with great maneuverability of the player and do it at a time that seems almost impossible to recreate. The game was developed with Google sketch up and used by the company Ubisoft. 
A couple of these time periods include the American Revolution, the Renaissance, The Seven Years war, Rome, and Israel and the Crusades.
